Although the well being of society is primarily a
responsibility of the government, the private sector cannot neglect its obligation to
contribute to this cause. Thus, while engaged in profit seeking enterprises, private
citizens should abide by the guiding principle of "earn more, give more." It was
in this spirit that I established the Li-Ching Foundation. Except for that portion
required to support my family, I intend to gradually contribute my entire earnings to this
foundation.
The characters Li-Ching mean to develop youth ("Li" - to build,
"Ching"- youth). I also chose the name in memory of my mother, Sun Li-Ching. She
lived to be 97 years of age and passed away peacefully, leaving behind only a few worn out
personal belongings, scores of grateful descendants and a family legacy, not of money, but
of belief in education. In tribute to her selfless spirit and high ideals, the Li-Ching
Foundation was established to facilitate the educational and cultural advancement of
society.
